It's been awhile..

Sorry gang, I know it's been quite some time since I've posted on the blog. Many reasons play into that factor from moving to farm (yay!) to owning another horse, work etc. Yep, that's right, I am finally in the country. Moved my QH mare out with me and even better, she's been bred to a beautiful Black/white Paint. She's due mid Jan.

THEN, 5 months ago, I purchased another horse, a black qh mare. Knew nothing about her, she came from an auction which is normally a high risk. WELL, I got pretty lucky, sure she has some quirks, but she's come a long way in just a few months. I'm looking forward to showing her next season.

Speaking of, show season is over. We didn't show much this year as I was the Western Performance Director for the http://www.tphcon.net/ club in New Liskeard. We did do some Team Penning though, which was a blast!

TPHC - TRAIL RIDING AT IT'S BEST

Show season is upon us, well not too far anyways. It's been a very long time since I've wrote anything on this blog, but here I am.

TPHC http://www.tphcon.net/ is a horse club in Northern Ontario offering both English and Western performance shows, Mounted games, Western Games and Trail riding.

If you visit the site, you can find the dates to all the above.

This year I sit on the board as the Western Performance Director so I'm looking forward to have a different perspective on the whole thing.

I have to say, my favorite area of the TPHC is the trail rides! We do roughly 15 trail rides all season. These are rides planned at certain locations in the area. Each ride can be from 3-5 hours in length, sometimes a bit shorter. After each ride, we always stop to have some lunch. Some rides, we plan BBQ's.

Although we can predict the dates and places for the rides, we can't predict the weather, so dress accordingly of course. We ride in all weather pretty well.

If you haven't joined us on a ride yet, then saddle up and ride with the wind with the TPHC trail riding group!

First ride is April 25th, 11am at Echo Lake in Earlton Ontario. Just follow the signs!

NOTE: Well, let me start by apologizing first. I've been a bit slow getting some stories up. I still need to get the RCMP story up, I will soon. TPHC TRAIL RIDE JUNE 6, 2009

We couldn't have had better weather, other then the black flies that tried to carry us away on a few occasions, mother nature actually co-operated with us. It was a sunny, warm day for the entire ride. Well, the morning did start off chilly, but for a day that rain was predicated, we prevailed!

The ride was at Club Echo, Earlton, one of the better rides of the season. This ride has miles of sandy trails. We also broke trail through a few bush trails, this allowed some of us to actually do some jumping over some logs that laid in our way. There was also a lot of limbo dancing going on as we rode under trees/branches at our eye levels.

We had a turn out of I think 10 or 12 riders, even a new membership. The ride went smoothly. Chelsea Buns was a trooper and you'd never know she was 21. She had more spunk and energy then some of the younger horses. I swear she trotted most of the ride when she wasn't sneaking in a few runs. She was so focused on being the leader and to me, this is a huge accomplishment to see her so confident. At one point, she never liked to be the leader, she was too scared and was pretty insecure about herself.

The ride ended with cooling off our horses and letting them rest as we all sat around and had lunch and discussed our ride. The door prizes were awarded and we all packed our stuff and headed home after a great ride with some great friends.

RCMP Musical Ride

Well, the RCMP riders and their horses have arrived at Rosegrove Stables today. All 32 horses are now all snug and cozy in their stalls while they rest up for the big day.

Unfortunately, the weather hasn't been the best. It's wet and dirty, but come rain or shine, these 32 riders and their horses are going to put on a show that will make everyone smile from age 1 to 120.

YET ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL RIDE TO TOWN

About 40 km later, Chelsea Buns and I have accomplished another great ride to Kirkland Lake from Rosegrove Stables in Otto Township.

It was a fantastic ride with great weather. I tell ya, what a perfect way to gain the trust of your horse, or lose it I guess.

I can nearly say that Chelsea Buns is bomb proof. Would she be with a different rider, honestly, I don't know.

There were several things that did frighten her and if she had her way, would of turned full tilt back home. However, with very little convincing, she went through every obstacle asked. Just amazing.

Our rides never go without stories of people stopping to touch chelsea, feed her treats and ask a gazillion questions. I love the questions and love to answer them to the best of my knowledge.

S ome of the cutest things can be heard from some of the small visitors such as "look, she has teeth" or "how many apples in a year does she eat".

I have to say my most favorite part of the ride is the smiles. Smiles from 1- 100. It doesn't matter what age you are, everyone loves a horse and especially to see one come through town. There really is something magical about what horses do for people.

I am very proud of how far I have come with my 21 year old Quarter Horse Mare Chelsea Buns. We have overcome some pretty tough obstacles over the years. Imagine, at one time, this mare wouldn't even leave the driveway and if she did, it took you hours to get 2 ft.

S o the first TPHC show is about to begin this weekend. If the weather doesn't rear it's usual head as it's calling it should be a great weekend.

Who is Lindsay Grice?

Coach, judge and horse advice columnist, Lindsay Grice says her riding career got off to a rough start.
“As a hunter rider, I went off course more times than I can count. I just didn’t have the solid foundation and understanding I needed to be competing at the level I was.”

Now, in over twenty years as a professional coach and trainer, Lindsay says that her struggles as a novice rider have shaped her style today. “I love putting the complex principles of horse training and competing into simple steps that riders can understand. I equip my students with the show day game plan and course memorization skills that I never had as a junior rider.”
Lindsay draws regularly on the sports psychology training she gained through coaching education. She is a certified Equine Canada coach as well as NCCP (multi sport) coach.
“Handling show nerves, distractions, and disappointments is as much a part of a success as the technical riding skills.”

Her students have won at major shows in the United States and Canada. Lindsay continues to actively compete in both english and western events, specializing in the American Quarter Horse Association circuit, and is frequently is in the winner’s circle.

Her popular seminars take her throughout North America, creating thinking horsemen of her students by teaching the “hows” and “whys” of riding.
She says “Ideally, horses, whatever the discipline, should “play” like a musical instrument, understanding and responding to every subtle cue from the rider.”

Lindsay has often been a guest lecturer for the University of Guelph’s Equine Behavior programs and regularly teaches weekend clinics for local breed associations and 4H clubs.

T he perfect sport for any cowboy or cowgirl and it’s coming right your way! This June 12 and 13th at Porky and Kay Watters on Hwy 65 East will be hosting a Team Penning clinic for anyone who’s ever wanted to experience a life with cow’s and horses!

THE RCMP MUSCIAL RIDE!

It is a great honor for Kirkland Lake to host such a prestique event and I for one, am very excited!

The ride will be Friday, May 29, 2009 at Civic Service Stadium! These talented riders will be staying at Rosegrove stables during their venture here. I plan to soak up as much of this event as I can, so you can be sure I will return to Equine North Blog with a story for those that might have missed it.

KEEPING WARM

Winter just keeps dragging and for most Equine lovers, this isn't a good thing! Although I do ride all year long, including trail rides, many of you don't because you hate to be cold. I can't stand to be cold either! However, the whole secret to staying warm is the bottom of your sole and I mean your feet, to be exact, your toes.

I don't know about the rest of you guys, but if my toes stay warm, the rest of me does! So I usually invest in a ton of toe warmers (photo at the left). A well worth investment for any outdoor winter sport!

These live savers can be purchased at Canadian Tire as well as many other stores that sell outdoor gear aren't aren't pricy either. I put on a think pair of socks, apply the toe warmer, then put another pair of thicker socks on over top and VOILA - 6 hours of toasty warm toes!

You can buy other warmers, hand warmers, full feet warmers, and bigger ones to use on your thighs etc, but I find the toe warmers enough, the rest of me is bundled up with winter clothing and away I go.

HE'SSSSSSSS BACK!

Josh Lyons will be back again this summer for those of you who missed him last year, or those of you, like myself, who are addicated!

In August, you can even complete your Accreditation with Josh Lyons! Wow, what I would do (almost) to be a part of this! Heck, I'd love to be a part of the clinic again, but when you don't own a trailer and a fat bank account, it's not so easily achieved. So, I will go to watch at least.

Anyways, any of you who may not had a chance to check this out last year, you must not miss it this time around!

Winter Blahs

I first have to apologize, it's been awhile since I've posted to the blog and not because I'm not riding etc, I am, even in this darn cold!

I'm not a big winter fan, never have been, HOWEVER, it is a very beautiful time to ride when the temps are 50 below with blazing winds nearly knocking you clear out of the saddle.

When the new year starts and those crazy holidays are done, and we can finally find room to breath again, we start to think of show season! YIPEEE..oh wait, it's still at least 3 months away for most of us! Oh well, it's still getting closer. And today, I noticed the daylight was lasting longer.

On a good note, I am boarding with a facility that has an indoor. I don't use it nearly as much as I should being the trail rider love I am, but I am using it and I am trying an honest attempt at being better prepared for show season. Whether it happens or not, is a different story! You can check out their website at www.rosegrovestables.com.

Crooked Stirrups

Yep, I know, sounds like something defective, well it's the farthest thing from!

Go peek at a pair of your old stirrups. Does the place where you stand, the tread, have a lot more wear toward the outside than it does closer to the horse? Do your little toes go numb, your back ache, your legs hurt and your knees get "wore out" when you ride, especially for an extended length of time? Well I know I felt all of the above, but that's changed since I invested in a set of these crooked Stirrups.

The first minute I mounted and placed my feet in the stirrups, I was like WOW!!! I felt an instant difference in my seat, and how my legs were positioned. These stirrups have not only reduced much pain they've improved my riding and improved my horse!

They are available in different sizes and really don't look so bad on the saddle either.

STORM CHASING

One thing about trail riding in the summer, is the weather can change in a heartbeat!

I headed out on a trail ride with a young girl on her pony riding along side us. We rode for about an hour and I could feel the air change. It was cool, like the feel or rain on it's way. We could hear distant thunder, but that's generally not so much of a threat.

However, we decided it's best to ride back and be closer to the barn incase. Once we started up the driveway of the barn, the lightening started filling the sky, so we decided that was it.

As I was driving back to town (1o mins from cochrane), I came upon a view I'd never seen in my life! I didn't have my camera, but I had my cell, so I was able to capture this amazing site!

Once I got to town, you could literally see night and day over the lake. Then within seconds, the storm hit and hit hard! I was inside in a local store and it sounded like there were a gazillion stones being pelted against the building and outside. It was hail, bigger then I ever saw. Big enough to hurt and big enough to cause damage. There were even broken windshields and dented vehicles!

The winds were picking up and the lightening was nonestop. Filling the sky, lighting up the huge hail as it filled the deep puddles that had started forming from the hard rain mixed in the hail.

I took a quick run out to my van and got home as fast as I could. This storm lasted a good few hours and took the hydro out with it. It's neat how creative one can be when their hydro is out.

Anyways, I am thankful I wasnt' out on the trail when this hit. I don't think there's a horse out there that could of or would of handled the size of that hail!

To the right, you can see in front of my boot, a piece of hail that fell at my feet at the door of the store..that is HUGE hail!

Porquis Summer Schooling Show
June 22, 2008

Despite the unpredicable northern weather, the first Porquis schooling show was still a lot of fun for all who showed. The day started off sunny and actually too hot at some points, but sure enough, part way through, mother nature did her thing.

Right in the middle of a showmanship class, as I was going towards the judge, BOOM! Lightening hit, thunder rolled and hail bounced off my horse back like nails! My poor mare was curling around me begging to find an escape from the short, unexpected storm. We all ended up going into our horse trailers. No, not to stay dry, I was already soaked by the time we got there!

After about 30 mins in, the rain let off and we completed the riding part of the show including games. The ring was a bit wet, but everything still went off smoothly..

Tiffinany's students from Horse Power Stables experienced their first show with joy as they went home with many ribbons and a big smiles.

We placed 2- 1st's, 5 -2nds, a 3rd and high point for open. However, there wasn't many people in Open, so the competition was slim. Shelly with Sweet Pea did fantastic as always!

Lisa Boivin was our judge and did a fantastic job. She will be judging the next show on July 20th as well.
Congrats to all who placed and all who reached their goals!

Josh Lyons Clinic

I am just pumped! I still can't believe my horse and I will have the privilege of being in the same ring as Josh and most likely Jana Lyons (that's his wife). June 6th to June 11th. We will be there for the 3 day symposium and the 3 day rider clinic!

Josh and his Father, John are my equine hero's. They just have a way with horses that achieves all you could imagine without the use of the old "cowboy way". Give the horse a job, what better advice to give to a rider and their horse.

I've always dreamed of being able to partake in a Lyons clinic but never thought I'd have the opportunity. When I heard he was coming just hours away from where I live, I was ecstatic! I mean tears in my eyes ecstatic! It was a hefty price to pay but people spend that on holidays to warm countries each year, so that's my holiday and I can't think of anything else I'd rather be doing!

Chelsea Buns and I are pretty pale in comparison to a lot of the riders enrolled into this clinic, but we still mean to absorb all we can from this clinic.

I plan to keep a journal of each day and TONS of photos, so be sure to watch for your story when we return.

Annual Horse/Tack Auction

This past May 10, Mother's day weekend, held the annual horse auction held at the sales barn in New Liskeard. Not only is it a place to sell or buy a horse, and or buy tack, used or new, it's a great social gathering for horse folks in the area! It's great running into all my equine friends under one roof!

The auction always has at least 100 horses to bid on, from mini-ponies to great big work horses with big hearts waiting to please. Checking out all the horses can also work up an appetite. The auction cooks fresh burgers, hot dogs and sausage on a bun outside. This also, right next to the building which hosts TONS of new horse tack. You can either buy what you need brand new or wait and place a bid in the auction room.

This event just seems to get bigger and bigger each year. There was traffic parked for miles and equine shoppers all over.

These auctions do have their downside, some of those horses are very unloved and it's not easy to keep a blind eye to them :( On the positive side, there are some great horses up for grabs too, show horses, trail horses, even papered horses!

Unfortunately, I don't attend to purchase a horse. I wish, but one horse is all I can handle for now. Perhaps one day if I ever get my own barn, I'll be loading a trailer with auction horses.

One Horse Town
If you live in Cochrane Ontario, this past Sat, March 29, 2008, you might have caught a glimpse of myself and my Quarter Horse mare, Chelsea Buns, parading down the streets of Cochrane.

We rode in from where we board (roughly a 1.5 hour ride in), and rode through town. It was a beautiful day, perfect for riding! No wind, warm and the ground was perfect, not slippery and not too messy.

There were many new experiences for my mare from the big mill, water tower, to some large equipment digging ditches. Buns was fantastic, hardly a reaction from anything, except the horse eating, sewer grates of course. However, she soon realized they weren't going to eat us, at least not that day.

The most exciting thing about riding a horse through town is the reactions of people who see the horse, especially the children. I see so many smiles, I can't help but smile right back. I so remember that feeling when I was kid if I saw a horse. There was no stopping me! I'd have to go see that horse. So anytime, I'm asked to stop I do.

We spent some time standing around at L&R's to let people pet Buns and answer the gazillion questions the children had. The biggest one answered "yes, you can ride your horse in town". Horses were the first mode of transportation, so they are welcomed on just about any streets in any city, town etc. Horses have as much rights on the street as your vehicle.

So if you live in the area and you see us riding by, don't be shy, shout to us and we'll stop! Chelsea Buns loves the attention anyways!!

Romance hasn't died

I recently had the privilege of meeting the owner or Windsong Carriage from Owen Sound: http://www.windsongcarriage.com/

Gordie, the founder and owner of Windsong, brings back the days when the only mode of transportation was horse and carriage. Only, he does it with a touch of class; top hat, tails, and a smile that would melt anyone who looked his way.

His handcrafted, fringe top surrey carriage which he custom made himself, strolls down the city streets with his proud, powerful horse/s. In this case, it was Duke who took us for a stroll, a kind, golden, Belgian who's wants nothing more then make sure you enjoy your ride/tour through the streets.

Windsong is known mostly for doing weddings. What a romantic way to say I do, even for the not so equine lover. Riding down the streets in a classy carriage controlled by a handsome man in top hat and tails and the sound of the horses hooves pounding on the pavement. Surely an addition to your wedding photo album you'll want to have.

Windsong will go pretty well anywhere in Ontario. Your best to give him a call directly (tell him equine north set you) to find out the specifics, but from what I hear, it's a memory never to be forgotten. I know I'll never forget my trip there. HIDE THE FLEECE! Well, it's that time again, horse lovers dare NOT wear anything fleece to the barn in fear of returning home looking like sasquatch! All of our equine friends are starting their spring shed! So between the shedding of my quarter horse mare and wiretin willy saying 6 weeks to spring, I'm pretty excited!

Winters just seems to get longer and longer as I get older and older. So the site of shedding hair is such a pretty site!

If anyone has some great tips to help with spring shedding please share. I do know many people who show early in the season, will start to double blanket their horses to force the shedding even faster. I just use a lot of elbow grease and a shedding blade.

PARADES!!

On another note, Cochrane Ontario, recently had their Winter Carnival. I love riding my horse in parades and had hope to do just so. Weather was a factor in leaving the decision till last minute as well as trailering with whomever might be going. So I was pretty up in the air on where I stood. However, company coming over for the day helped to make the decision.

However, a few locals did get to enjoy the parade with their horses. Doug Jenson proudly rides his steed and in front is little Miss Roy on her little pony. Perhaps next year I'll get a chance to ride in the parade.

BRING ON THE MUD - SHOW SEASON

I just finished filling up the event section of Equine North with some of the upcoming Equine Events! A sure sign we will be buried in the shedding of spring horse hair all over us, as we try to shed our horses winter coats for the first show being May 2008!

Bring on the Mud! Really, I will be so happy to see terra firma not covered in that white stuff everywhere I look! I'd rather walk through the mud , because then that means it's warm outside and that show season is right around the corner!

Is the End in Site?

Well, winter has been long and it's still far from over if your from Northern Ontario. The ole white stuff hit us early and hit us hard and hasn't stopped.

At one point I was really wondering where the snow was going to go, however, mother nature decided to tease us with 3 days of spring weather and rain in Jan. At one point, I could see the garden starting to peek out from beneath the melted snow. BUT, on that 4th day, Mother Nature decided it was a joke and she dumped it all back on us!

Enough about the snow, there is something to look forward too besides spring; A Josh Lyons Clinic will be help in our parts from June 6-June 8th. Sounds like an exciting weekend for those participating and even the spectators.

A New Season Begins: It's been awhile since I've last posted. I was complaining about rain in the last post, and guess what, it's been raining for the past few days! haha, we're never happy are we?

Winter has started to blanket us with his white stuff though and even thick enough to start sleigh rides, but now I'm getting a bit ahead of myself here. Since my last post, I have moved my horse to a different boarding facility which is only 10 mins from where I live rather then 45!

Now, don't get me wrong, Crystal Clear Stables was awesome! We had top notch care, and learned sooooo much being there! However, the drive was getting the best of me. I really need my horse time and now being 10 mins away, I'm getting my fill! It's rather exciting knowing I can go out and ride and see my horse anytime and be part of her daily routine. I really am in 7th heaven.

So, the new barn is Power Horse Stables is owned by Tiffany and Dameon. This family is known for many horse related activities from barrel racing, summer camps to Winter Sleigh rides!

Thunder, the big, trusty Belgian, has and will be giving many smiling faces sleigh rides through some winter wonderland this season and I get to experience this first hand! Chelsea and I went for a ride on one of the test rides on the first snow fall. Thunder covers ground mighty quick as he pulls the big red sleigh through the trails surrounded by snow covered trees. What a great way to spend some time with family.

RAIN RAIN GO AWAY!

If you are from Northern Ontario, you have already started or are contemplating, building an Arc!

This Summer, wait, what summer? This apparent summer has been the most wet, damp, cold and dirty summer that I recall. I'm sure there isn't anyone that will disagree!

I have given up checking the weather each day. I am now the weather forcaster. I call for rain and more rain. Wait, I hear thunder, again. So perhaps a thunderstorm.

When the sun does appear, don't let it fool you. It's a trap to lure you outdoors. Once you start to enjoy the warmth of the sun and hope it will finally dry up the more then soaked ground, guess what, yep, you got it, it RAINS!

I board my horse, so I can get away from this crazy weather. I feel sorry for those of you on farms right now. Nothing dries up. The ground is such a mess everywhere you go! I'm not sure what kind of hay will be available this year, but I can imagine it will be quite costly.

On the weekend, we managed to get a dry session to do some work in the ring. I then thought I'd take advantage of that sun and head out on a trail ride. So, Chelsea Buns, my horse, my dog and myself head out into the wild blue younder.

Not even 10 mins from home, I can feel the air change. I slip on my rain coat thinking it's going to rain any min (surprise surprise). Sure enough, the drizzle started.

I figured I'd rebel against that rain and keep riding, that perhaps, it will drizzle only a bit and then the sun will appear again. NOPE, the further from home we went, the harder it rained. It rained so hard at one point my horse had her head to the ground trying to avoid the pressure of the rain on her face.

So, we had to turn around and we headed home. The ride was not a waste though, soon as we hit the open field, a galloping we went! It really is like riding with the wind when you gallop free, but doing it in the rain is even more of rush!

So, if by chance you see an arc floating by this summer, it's most likely me, so jump aboard and join us.

THE WORLD IS A SMALLER PLACE

I know, your thinking "what does this have to do with horses?" Well plenty really. Read on.

Facebook has been around for a bit now, but it's only recently that it's become a household name pretty much. If you aren't on facebook, it's kinda like saying "no, I don't have a phone".

Facebook has become the worlds addiction x 10. I refused at the start of this new phase to join something of the such. Like I have time for something else. However, after upteen million requests to join people's facebook, I gave in, and I'm glad I did. Why you say? For many many reasons.

First and utmost important reason: I've found friends I have lots touch with for years and years! Just today, I found my teenage friend that I hung out with throughout public school years. Just before that, I found a childhood friend I hung with in my original home town when I was like eight! Friends from the past town I lived in and people I met on other internet related places and lost touch with.

It also seems to keep people in touch more, remember birthdays and blah blah blah. Mind you, like all new addictions, I'm sure it will fade away. But in the meantime, if you haven't joined, try it. It's free (no I'm not making any side money on this..haha) and it's also fun!

Now for those of you asking why I mention this on a horse blog, well there are a gazillion horse groups you can join and there's a lot of familiar horse folks from the area on there.

So when you join, look me up "Anna Sawicki". Check my groups to find the horse groups (there's still plenty more, I'm only in a few) and check my friends to see if there's any you know and don't forget to add me to your friends list too!

May 26, TPHC Western Performance Show

The first Western Performance show of the season was a great learning experience for Chelsea Buns and I. As well, the hard work we've put in during the last month shined through.

This year traveling to the TPHC shows has increased in the miles. I now travel with Crystal from Crystal Clear Stables. The 3 hour ride up went well and safe.

The show started off great in Showmanship, taking 2nd place, with Crystal in 1st! I was extremely pleased with this placing. With Crystals skills and the time she spent with me as well as time practicing, it paid off come show time.

We placed in 3rd in halter. Even at 18, Chelsea still has an awesome build and holds herself well. This season she is starting off in great shape as well.

Our riding classes, we placed in the same as we normally do, last or 2nd last. However, we prevailed in many areas that we set as our goals and I was quite proud of my mare as she can be quite silly at times.

What was important to us was that we kept a nice slow jog, transitioned more smoothly between gaits and actually stopped within a few steps from canter to walk. I also wanted to keep a better seat. All prevailed!

Our long-term goal is to slow down that canter, hopefully that will come. We still have many miles to go yet.

Crystal placed well with her new prospect, Portia. This young paint mare was also so well behaved for her first show, you'd have thought she was a seasoned show horse. Her Daddy, Aladdin, whom you will see showcased on her new website (available soon), threw his handsome genes into this pretty mare as well as his personality.

Crystal was very pleased with her mare.

Zoey who also boards a horse at Crystal Clear stables joined us at the show. She placed 1st using Portia in the Youth Showmanship..great job Zoey! She also hung out with us and helped us out, thanks again for that!

Another highlight of the show, is seeing my old horse friends again as well. Since I've moved away from the area, I don't see everyone often, so the horse shows allow me to interact with old friends again.

Putting on the Miles..
Sunday was yet another planned trail ride. "Thinking we might be considered the three musketeers", Doug, Pascal and myself headed out for a relaxing 3 hour trail ride. This ride was a learning one though.

When planning any kind of trail ride, it's always best to be prepared BEFORE you head out. Be prepared for what, well ANYTHING would be the best answer!

How about losing a Chicago screw off your rein, and not having something to tie it back on with? My boot lace did the trick, but this little moment makes me realize the importance of filling that horn or saddle bag up with things that might be useful.

Here's a great list of things I've learned that is handy to bring along..

Lead rope
halter
extra leather pieces (for tying)
hoof pick
small first aid kit
bug stuff for person and horse
compass
phone
knife
water
snacks
a watch

But remember, anything important, such as cell phones, medications etc, if you leave it on your horse and your horse gets away, it's of no use to you then. Keep things like that in your pockets.

For people who like to show, trail rides are a great chance to introduce your horse to strange places and even work on different things you'd do in the show ring. I generally relax when I trail ride, but I do tend to take advantage of some things when the moment is right.

Riding alone on trail rides isn't always the safest thing. If you do, it's always good to let someone know where your going and how long you think you'll be. BUT one thing that is great to have if you ride alone or even with other riders, is a dog. A trusty dog will keep other animals at bay or warn you of any upcoming danger. They make great company too!

My German Shepherd, Lance wasn't introduced to horses in the first few years of his life, but he's adjusting well and yesterday was his first long trail ride on the road and in the bush with us.

He was FANTASTIC! He stayed to the side with us when traffic passed, he didn't bother the horses and he kept a good pace with us. However, when we returned home, he crashed and I think he moved once to try to get on the couch and his back end didn't seem to want to think the same as his brain. He didn't wake until late this morning haha.. But, you watch, next time I load my saddle in the van, he'll be wagging his tail begging to come for more.

So as relaxing and fun as trail rides can be, it really is good to be better prepared then we were when we headed out, lesson learned.

Just Another Ride....

Well this one is just about our last trail ride last weekend.

It was a beautiful day so naturally, a good excuse to drop any work and saddleup. This time, it wasn't just Pascal and I. Doug joined us in the infamous Drifter, a mount known for a safe trail ride.

We just planned for a short ride since everyone had a busy day. Not a whole lot to tell about this ride, except, as always, I come back a new person. Refreshed, renewed, whatever you want to call it.

One highlight of the ride though was this little dog that come running out. He was on a mission to kill the horses, ALL three of them! He couldn't of weighed more then 2 pounds. HE came out of his driveway full blast, and ran right up chelsea's leg, nipping. Of course, my good ole mare I'm sure just thought it was a fly. He went after drifter, but then when he headed to Spinner, Pascal got off to pick the dog up as we were sure the dog would meet his death at the legs of Spinner. The owner came and retrieved his bold, brave little dog who's mission had failed.

We also ended up visting a local cottage with some folks from down south. They took pics of their little boy on the horse and chatted awhile with us. Then it was back home.

MEETING HORSES ON THE ROAD

The one thing I long for during the winter months, is trail rides that last for hours! This past Sunday broke in the start of what will be a great season for trail riding.

Pascal and myself headed out from Crystal Clear stables for a nice Sunday afternoon trail ride. Pascal riding Spinner and myself on the infamous, Chelsea Buns.

The weather was more then awesome! There was no wind, rain, bugs and all the little things that can spoil a good trail ride. There was just sun and the sound of nature.

Trail rides always offer many expected happenings, but one of the things I run into the most is ignorant drivers. Ignorant as in just plain not understanding how to react when you come upon riders. Horses being the fickle creatures they are, are unpredictable and ANYONE who is driving and comes past a horse and it's rider PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEE slow down. I can't stress how important that is!

If a vehicle doesn't slow down (this includes, cars, trucks, bikes you name it!), it can not only spoke the horse, it can throw rocks that will cause severe damage to horse and or rider! This just spells out a total diseaster for all! The horse may even kick at your vehicle.

Beeping your horn to warn us your coming is not a very bright idea either. Sure, a lot of horse on the trail are generally quiet and not bothered by a lot but there are still horses that are, so please don't beep the horn or yell and scream etc.

Also, did you know it is the law, if a rider signals you to stop, YOU MUST!

Myself as a rider, I always respect people's property and take care when riding on roads, so it would much appreciated if others who meet us on the roads, took the care as well.

Saddle Up, Show Season is Soon to Be..

What does the end of May mean to most; camping, may 2-4 weekend, fishing. YEP, but that's to the non-horsie world. To the other half, the horse community, it's show season!

Anyone who is aware that the end of May holds the first show of the season (for us TPHC members), we have already been working our horses and our tired, out of shape, winter riding selves. Preparing our tack, our show gear, horse trailers etc. It's an exciting time of the year.

Myself, I am rather excited about this upcoming season since things are slightly different. I have had my horse Chelsea Buns in some training, along with myself with Crystal from Crystal Clear Stables. It's only been a short while, but I see a HUGE improvement already.

Anyone who knows my mare, knows how cowgirl she is, and how half cock-eyed she moves. Even the trainer said it was like getting on a bat out of hell and was sure she would be sky-rocketed out of the saddle! So, needless to say, Crystal has a challenge and a half, but she will prevail ;)

Well, we aren't professional show material, but we are a team, Chelsea and I. I'm not sure about Chelsea, but I know I sure look forward to trying out everything we've learned so far.

Now if I can just get her on the trailer without a fuss and then even better, not creating some heavy bond with the horse she trailers with that she calls for the horse the entire show, we'll be well on the way.

Time for a change!

Like the old saying goes, "behind every closed door, right in front are new ones" or something like that. You get the drift.

My move to Cochrane Ontario, although not far from home, still feels like a gazillion miles away without my friends and familiar faces just footsteps away. I've had to endure, wait, let me rephrase, we've had to endure (we as in myself, my daughter, my horse and my dog) many changes in the past three months. Something as simple as no MacDonald's, but no worries, replaced by AW..haha. No unlimited tanning, no gyms like I'm use too, no just hoping in the car to visit my parents, no hairdressers that take me the same day I call..no familiar faces and blah blah blah. I know, seems simple and nothing to complain about, but you really don't know what you have until you lose it. Try going from living in a house you don't share, to living in the basement, under which has to be the most disrespectful family I've known, but we won't go there, this site is about horses ;)

Alas, the one thing that still always feels like home is my time spent with my horse. It doesn't matter where we are. As long as we are outside, and next to nature, I feel right at home.

The new place I'm boarding my horse is just as wonderful as where I use to be, thank god I didn't' have to downgrade in at least one area. Crystal, of Crystal Clear Stables, is my lifesaver. I've decided to break down and actually put Chelsea Buns into some real training. Sooooo tired of my slanted mare who wants to race at every chance!

So, in such a short time, I am happy to report, the results I was hoping for are, well the results I was hoping for. It's still early and she's just started in training and I've only taken a few lessons to make sure I do the same as she is being trained to do, but already, I see a world of difference! And boy does it feel good. I'm really excited about the possibilities.

What about trail rides..well THAT will always be my favorite thing to do. Now that the weather has been better, I have taken on a few short rides beyond the property. It's not the same without my old riding buddy Nancy though :( and the gals from Winterwood. But, Crystal is kind enough to lend me her husband now and then who loves to trail ride as much as me I'm sure.

All in all, before this short writ-up turns into my life story, although change can be frightening, change is also good and I look forward to more positive change from my favorite equine friend Chelsea, and myself.

Spring has Sprung!

For most in Northern Ontario, today brought some amazing spring type weather. I am nearly certain that more then 3/4 of our snow melted away while I was inside at work today. When I left for lunch I was in awe at the warm temps, of course returning back to work with no jacket..yippee! So, where did I go directly after work??....YEP, you guessed, it Directly to go and passed on my 200 dollars as I wanted to get to the barn as quick as possible!

Realllyyyyyyyyyyyyyy hard to drive the speed limit with sunny weather, clear roads and good music you know ;)

Now with this extremely fast melt, I was wondering if I'd need scuba gear to ride ;) We saddled up and hit the fields. I was amazed at how just a few days ago, the snow was much too deep to travel through on horseback, and today was nearly nil.

So now the itch has begun. Show season is around the corner, and I'm sure many of you have the itch. I am rather excited at the new prospects for me this year, between the availability of a great coach/trainer and the very fact, I may be the new proud owner of a 2 yr old paint filly this summer! YIPEEE..show season is going to be fun

Equine Events and our Move

Well, even though it's the dead of winter, the events are coming in on Equine North. So do check it out. There's enough to do with your equine friend from Feb to April to keep you strong in the saddle come show season.

We are just in the process of a move further north and that does include moving my horse to a new boarding facility. Chelsea Buns is recently at Winterwood but will be moving to Crystal Clear Stables sometime this week. I move Feb 1 to Cochrane Ontario. Only a few hours from where I live, but further north and a tad colder..eeeek!

But the move is not to experience colder weather, it is due to a fantastic job offer and this can only mean a better chance of owning more then one horse. Afterall, horses are like M&M's, you can't have just one ;)

Equine North Updates

W ell, it' a new year already and we are about 3 months left of winter and before the new show season starts!

So far, this winter has been wonderful, well messy, but hardly cold at all and not a lot of snow until recently. Get no arguements from me.

Equine North has been slow, not a lot happening, but the business section has been growing. Don't forget this section is FREE for all Equine Business owners, big or small!

I've still been getting good riding time in even with the messy weather. Defintely not as much as summer riding, but enough to make me happy.

Winter, @ Winterwood..

Although I have never been a HUGE fan of winter, I am of winter riding.

The start of winter is always challenging with many storms and icy road conditions, so riding starts off minimal. So when I woke this morning to a brisk, sunny winter day, I just knew it was a perfect day to ride. Although cold, there was no wind and you just had to dress for it. There's just something magical about a ride through a field covered with shiny, sparkling snow under the sun and the tree branches heavily weighted by fresh fallen snow. It's really postcard, photo time!

Winter, Just Around The Bend

Oct 16th, and Ontario has already experienced school cancellations, road closures and traffic accidents all due to Mr Winter himself.

Living in the North has it's advantages and they do far outweigh the winter disadvantages, but yet, each year when winter crawls upon us, I still wish I could hibernate!

Thankfully, there has still be some great riding weather! Our colors of fall are gone with barely any leaves left make the bush lines look so much more bigger to our mounts causing them to think there are big bad tree branches that are going to eat them up as we ride the bush line.

Chelsea Buns, my QH mare is quiet spookish this time of year with the high winds, strange fall smells, cool air and the fact she can see right in the bush now., but we still hit the trails. There won't be many more days when we can go past the end of the driveway once the snow falls, so I like to take full advantage of our freedom right now.

We've also been practicing the barrel pattern as much as possible. A friend donated some barrels to me and the lady who boards my horse gave me a place out in the pasture to set them up.

We've also been working on a lot of different small things I want to improve on for next years shows.

Although the shows have just ended, I am already excited for next years shows!

Riding in the Fall

A lthough summer is my season, I do enjoy the vibrant colors of fall. It is a pretty loud reminder that winter is around the corner (brrrrr), but it has to be the most picturesque view mother nature has to offer all year round!

As most of you know, my favorite thing to do is trail ride and I have been doing a lot of that this past summer with many different horse friends, but mostly with my riding partner, Nancy.

It had been raining all morning and the day before, but the sun decided to stick it's bright face out so we decided we'd get a ride in. Nancy, myself, Heather and Sally and our trusty mounts get ready for an afternoon ride that would offer the brisk cool air of fall along with it's colors of gold, brown and yellow.

unfortunately, a down pout quickly reminded us of just in control mother nature is of our daily plans. Sally and I were still tacking up in the barn, but pour (pun intended haha) Nancy and Heather had started the trek down to the barn to meet us. As we waited patiently for the rain to stop or slow down, these two poor cowgals and their mounts were soaked to right through.

The pour didn't' last long and off we went. It was a three hour ride in total, not as long as we normally do, but nonetheless, still the only therapy that I'll ever need.

With winter fast approaching, I plan to get in as many trail rides as I can. Although, I still ride in the winter, we don't' get to venture off too far with the amount of snow we do get living in the North.

New Liskeard Fall Fair

September in New Liskeard Ontario is an exciting time for horse enthusiasts. Whether you are into heavy, light or mini horses, there is something for all at the New Liskeard Fall Fair!

Thursday starts of with the heavy/light horse pull. Friday hosts the line classes, including children's costume, halter and showmanship for both light and heavy horses as well as mounted games and western games in the evening. Saturday includes the western riding, English riding and jumping and then the heavy and light horses on wagons etc!

I was fortunate enough to be hired as the weekend photographer for the horse events and it was definitely a very exciting and educational weekend for myself. I had decided not to show since I had done enough throughout the summer, so as a photographer, I was there with a whole different prospective.

The great part about being the photographer is I was invited to be in the ring with all classes and all judges. That entitled me to some pretty privileged information as a rider! I learned so much from both Judges, (light and heavy) as well as the ring Stewarts and other horse people.

So many beautiful horses, and some amazing and talented riders were captured on photo. If you didn't get your print outs of your photos, they are available as well as CDs with all photos of the class you participated in at the following link: New Liskeard Fall Fair Photos.

As much as I was thankful to be the photographer and enjoyed meeting all the new people, next year, I will be a participant and hope that someone else is there to capture our moments on photo.

Summer is near end..

It's August 21, 2006 already! Boy, has the summer slipped through my fingers quickly this year. With only two more horse shows left to attend (for myself anyways), I find myself wondering what hobby I shall pick up for this upcoming winter since there won't be horse shows every weekend ;) Maybe watching mold grow since I'm really not much of a winter person. Although, I do get out and ride as much as possible.

The recent TPHC Horse Show, Aug 19, 2006 was yet another success for both Chelsea and I. Although, Chelsea was not in her best of moods that day. Like people, horses can have their bad days as well. It seemed to rub off on other horses as well. Many of the other owners were mentioning how their horses seemed so different that day. Oh well, no one was injured and the show went well. There were some new riders at the show as well. Be sure to attend the last show Sept 9th.

We stuck around and watched the barrel racing after the Western Pleasure performance. I am always in awe watching that sport. It's truly where my heart lies and one day I hope to be doing it on a steady basis.

There are some upcoming barrel racing competitions, one next month in Earlon and another near Quebec. I will be sure to get the dates soon.

TPHC Trail ride and upcoming rides

TPHC had yet another fantastic trail ride this past July 30, 2006. You can view some photos at Equine North.

If you were on the ride, you'll most likely see your horse in the photos! The ride was held at Gilmours in Haileybury. We had a BBQ after which was very good..thanks guys!

This upcoming weekend, Aug 5th and 6th is Crystal Clear Stables all breed show! This is one show I have been looking forward too forever! Not only because it has so many different types of events, and we get to camp out for a few days, I get to game! It was planned novice, but, I have been told to ride senior so watch out..I might come flying through that field a bit quicker then I intended! haha.

The following week, I will be doing a 3 day pack at Wyndy River Expeditions & Guest Ranch right here in our own area! Wow..I've only dreamed of doing something like this, so imagine my surprise when I found out about this great place Tim started! As a friend of mine always says "I was uber excited!".

Back in the saddle again!

Well July 28th was a big day. It was the first day Nancy and I were able to return to our trail rides! After Chelsea's eye taking some time to heal and Nancy's mishap and holidays, it's been at least 3 weeks or more since we did a ride.

We did a nice 4 hour ride and even though they called for showers, the weather was sunny and very warm for the whole ride. Nothing overly exciting like lions, tigers or bears or my, but it was certainly a very Zen experience. Oh, we did see one rabbit and I saw a deer in the ditch on my ride up to the barn.

TPHC Trail ride is this upcoming Sunday. Look forward to this ride and the BBQ after. I've missed the last few due to Chelsea's eye, but we're back in the saddle again for this one.

TPHC show on July 22 and Equine North

This past July 22nd held yet another great TPHC show with WHAO Sr. Judge, Mike Tucker placing some awesome riders with their amazing horses.

It was a warm day with a nice breeze off the lake and all went smoothly. Chelsea Buns and I placed 6th in the halter class!

Carla and Don Aultman brought home the winning High point division and Reserve! Carla (a beautiful horse blanket) for High Point and Reserve for Don. Also, in youth, the winners were Jasmine Sterling and 2nd Kayla Sears. Jr. high point was 1st, Tasha Rivard and 2nd, Marie Pier Cote. Congrats to all of you!

Since I am doing so much TPHC related postings, I thought I'd create an entire TPHC section on www.equinenorth.net for your viewing pleasure. If you visit the site, look for the TPHC Info link on the left or the text link at the very bottom of each page. In my last post I discussed a new health issue that arised with my mare, Chelsea. This is the reason posts have been slow, as we haven't been riding nor showing. Chelsea has had to stay in the dark (sunlight is not good for this type of injury) and away from any stress. The last few days see an improvement. Her pupil did dilate last week but the ulcer has only started to now, get smaller and less cloudy in her eye. Looks like she'll be ok in no time.Next show is this week, at the fair grounds, but I'm afraid I might just be watching this one, but the following week, yet another TPHC show, which I plan to attend.Just a reminder, anyone can send his or her equine business info to Equine North for their free ad

Equine Anterior Uveitis

As anyone knows who owns a horse or two, not only are horses predictably unpredictable, health issues can arise at the most unexpected times.

Recently, my mare's eye started to tear and seemed to irritate her slightly. So didn't think much of it, just cleaned the eye out with eye drops and kept it clean. However, within days, the eye started to swell with lots of yellow puss oozing from the corner of her eye.

Then a few days later, her eye started to cloud over which led me to believe she had an injury to her eye.

So after a visit with the vet, I find out Chelsea Buns has Anterior Uveitis, an inflammation of the iris surrounding the pupil. The entire pupil has constricted to help ease her pain. This was created by the onset of an ulcer on her eye. So she is going to stay in a semi-dark stall for a few days and have some eye drops and cream administered for 10 days. The main goal is to get the pupil dilated again so there is no long-term damage.

Could this have been prevented, most likely not. Horses tend to get the strangest things in their eyes. But, the most important thing is NOT to leave this untreated for long. So hopefully within a few days I will see a positive change.

Trail riding anonymous

She stands up in front of the entire group and admits to her addiction.."I am Anna Sawicki and I have a trail riding problem, I can't get enough! "

Okay, so some people think I'm crazy, others couldnt' care a less about reading my horse dialogues and some think I have a problem. You know what I think, I'm a very lucky gal.

I don't need to lie down on some strangers couch for $100 per hour to pour out my problems. I just jump on my horse and find the nearest trail. No pills, no doctors..no headaches, just the smell of my horse and the sound of nature. Really, someone should bottle it up (no side effects included).

It was only two days ago when Nancy and I had a great four hour ride and today we topped our trail ride with five hours of riding. No bears this time, and no swimming, but we did offer to use our 2 horse-power to help a blueberry picking couple who managed to get their truck stuck in a ditch. We noticed them from afar and decided to ride on over incase they needed some help. But, by the time we got there, someone had already come along with much stronger horsepower to pull them out.

So after stopping at Nancy's for a short bit, Chelsea and I rode back to the barn in hopes to catch a few lessons happening with Carla and Lisa but no one was doing any lessons at the time.

Chelsea and I had a great lesson from Shelly last night though (gotta look like I know what I'm doing at the next show! haha)

When do we go riding again, well I bet it won't be too long ;)

It's the stuff dreams are made of..

There really is nothing like the outdoors on horseback in Northern Ontario bush during the summer...Today, Nancy Hack and myself (Anna Sawicki) and our two horses, CC and Chelsea Buns went on a 4 hour trail ride in the back boonies. We rode up and across the larder lake highway and down the highway a bit up to a sand pit that had a small pond. We took off our saddles and headed to the water. Well my horse didn't go in, but Nancy rode her horse in and cooled off!

After a small break and cooling off, we saddled up and headed on the trails and back towards home. The ride was nearly over when suddenly, CC pulls her head up high! She sees something and sure enough, there's a bear standing on it's hind feet checking us out in the tall grass!! Well, I age about 12 years in one nano-second! Then wonder what we should do as the bear was close enough to charge if she had cubs with her.

CC took over instantly! A real trooper, she decided I'll save mom (Nancy) and use Anna and Chelsea as bear bait. CC pushes us onto the road closer to the bear while she safely tucks herself her behind onto the side of the road, furthest from the bear!

In the meantime that CC is trying to feed me to the bear, Nancy starts talking real loud and I join in quickly and we put our horses at a trot. That seemed to work and we weren't bear bait afterall..so we continued our ride back home.

I rode back to Nancy's before heading back home for a drink of water as I was out and the heat was just crazy today! Then we headed back to the barn at a slow walk while Chelsea decided to eat every few steps. All I could think about on the way back to the barn is.."this is what dreams are made out of"..really..you should try it.

TPHC 2nd Horse Show

Today's TPHC Horse Show was successful once again. The English division had a great turn-out with up to 18 riders in some classes!

My mare, Chelsea was just awesome today! We placed two 6ths, a 5th, 4th, and a 3rd. Many of the riders did so well, Joanna, Carla and darn if names slip my mind! I had a great time and can't wait for the next show! Why is it though, that after a show, all I want to do is go to bed! haha.

Shelly Loach was our coach this time around ..thank you Shelly for a great Job. Also big thanks to Rena and Sharon..two hard-working volunteers for the western Division!

And He Had a Dream -( Man rides his horse across Canada)

No one knows better about dreams coming true then Kimball Foord, the man riding across Canada, HORSEBACK! Kimball says he wants to cross our great nation the way they did 150 years ago and what better way to see it then at 6kph!

Kimball started from Guelph, Ontario, on May 6, 2006 and is heading west to finish in Vancouver, British Columbia, estimated to be sometime in the fall. His trusty ole riding partner, Cody, is a 7 year old American quarter horse. And a handsome fellow with a lot of character I might add!

On his way to Winterwood in Englehart, he met up with Dennis Peddie of Cougar Ridge Farms in Thornloe and he joined Kimball for a ways on his ride! I bet that was fun Dennis!

On June 14, 2006, Kimball made a pitstop at the very barn I board my horse, www.winterwood.info. Kimball and Cody will be resting their weary legs in the comfort of Winterwood with a great meal and some great company.

After my visit with Kimball and Cody, I am just green with envy! To be able to just say "ok Cody (his horse), that's it..let's ride across Canada and do it!

During my drive back home I kept thinking how I wished I could do something like that, but I just kept envisioning my horse ending up in a full 360 and into the ditch at the first transport going by at 100km! haha ..Not to mention all the things that get in the way to prevent me from just getting up and riding across Canada, like life..Kimball, you are a lucky individual..not only do you get to see most of Canada, and meet some great people, you get to do it by horseback!!

TPHC 3rd Trail ride

Well today, June 11th, was the 3rd TPHC trail ride held out at Echo Lake in Earlton again, but in a different area. I missed the 2nd ride which I heard was full of excitement! ;)

No pictures to share from this ride, but there were 16 riders and it was an awesome ride. No mishaps..well except for a little unexpected detour ;). The weather started off kinda crappy with some showers and a bit cold, but it cleared and didn't rain at all during our ride.

We rode 3.5 hours over some great terrain. There were many steep hills so my girl sure did get her exercise. Carla Aultman had her new mare there. Not only does she look awesome, she was great on the trail.

We gathered together for well deserved snack while our horses munched on hay and rested their tired feet to talk about our ride.

Hey congrats to Dan Aitchison, he won the door prize!

FIRST TPHC Show

Well this past weekend was sure an experience for Chelsea Buns and I. We attended our first Western horse show together and had a blast! We did well with a 6th in showmanship, 5th in halter and a 6th in Western Horsemanship which I might add, blew me away, as I didn't think we'd place at all in a riding class. You see, there is no novice in this show and we had to show senior, so I was happy to just come out alive!

The other gals from Winterwood, Sally, Shelly and Carla had a great morning in the English competition, and the western games were on after the western show at 6pm. I wish I could of stayed to watch, but I was finished for the day and ready for bed!

Crystal Calbert was our judge and I went home with some valuable lessons from her. She did a great job and everyone who helped to organize and run this show did a great job!

I am awaiting for photos from my mother and others who took some at the show. So I promise to post them soon as I can. This one is Chelsea Buns ready and waiting to go to the show.

Missed out on the trial ride today, wasn't able to get there, but it was best cause boy am I tired today! If anyone has photos they'd like to share, please do and send to annae@nt.net.

Exciting weekend coming up!

I know I've already mentioned it, but I just can't help it. I'm like a kid xmas morning. The first horse show is this upcoming Sat in New Liskeard, at the fair grounds. Western Performance starts at 2:00pm. So come on down and see all the ways to NOT ride your horse..haha. (well there will be some awesome riders, I was just referring to myself)

My car is back on the road so I headed out today to get some practice time in and boy do I need a lot of time! Oh well, it's all in fun and just getting there and back in one piece is my goal ;)

Sally had our Winterwood coats in today and boy do I love my coat! Think I'll sleep in it.

Following the Sat Show will be yet another TPHC trail ride. The one cancelled from last weekend. So all in all, by Monday, I will have to crawl to maneuver around with all those hours in the saddle.

So watch for those winterwood coats and stay tuned for some great photos of the weekend.

Victoria Weekend..Holiday?

Well, for most in the north, Victoria weekend holiday was not much of a holiday, other then we didn't' need to go into work..the WEATHER SUCKED! For the most part the winds were strong, it rained, anddddddddddddd , it snowed! Yes folks, we get snow in May in these parts. We also get snow in June and July some years! Why do we live here, simple, it's God's country, where else should one live? ;)

Not only were many camping trips cancelled, the 2nd TPHC trail ride was cancelled as well :( Just way too wet to ride. As for the cold, well most riders are quite die hard. Well, I know I am. I rode all winter. There was maybe a two week gap where it was impossible to ride, but that's it.

Winter riding has the most beautiful scenery too.

This coming weekend, 27th and 28th is the first TPHC horse show and I can't wait! Although I'm far from a professional when it comes to riding, I just enter the local horse shows for the fun of it, any ribbons are just a bonus.

I will be sure to keep you all posted on the upcoming horse show and post the results and some photos. Let's just keep our fingers crossed for some good weather!

Although we've had an amazing introduction to summer thusfar, the weather about turned face on us. Conveniently, in time for the long weekend! grrrrr. Sunday was suppose to be our 2nd trail ride of the year, but so far, it looks as though it's cancelled as it was suppose to be in a hay field. It would be much too wet and slippery for the horses and not to mention, FREEZING for us.

I suppose it works out as I don't have a vehicle to use, well as least for out of town purposes. My back break lines are leaking and my poor car doesn't see the doc till Wed next week.

Camping is even out of the question with this weather, oh well, great time to catch up on work *yawn*

Now whomever has waved their evil wand and bestowed me with a curse, please remove it! One should only have bad days, not bad weeks and a bad week it has been! ;)

One good thing, my yard looks amazing, leaves are early (darn bugs too) and my gardens look awesome!

Ok, this isn't horse related, but I just recently lost a friend due to an unexpected health issue that gave no warning and, no time. Just like that.. he was here yesterday, and gone by tomorrow. This person was not even what one would consider "old". He was a hard-working, non-judgmental individual who had many talents and treated everyone equal. Truly sad..

So guess the moral of the story is, if you love someone, tell them. Don't avoid love if it comes your way either..It's a rare finding.

Winston Churchill almost had it right!..

There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a woman

Ya I know, it's suppose to be for the outside of man, at least that's what Winston Churchill says. I have to say it does equal for woman because I tell you, no matter what kind of terrible day passes by me, it's all wiped away the minute I run my hand over my horse and smell the good ole "horse smell" (only horse lovers can understand that ;O)

It really is a therapy in itself. It's no wonder many institutions use horses in their rehabilitation programs from hard-core criminals to the developmentally challenged.

A book I read recently called "it's the horse", was all about a guy who used horses for therapy with people who were depressed, insecure etc. He would put them out there with a horse and say "now pick up the horses feet and clean it". Most people had no clue how to do so or for that matter, ever been around horses. During this brief moment, this gentleman could pin-point what was troubling your life just by the way you handled the horse and the way it reacted to the person.

It's no wonder he could, animals don't lie and they can sense your moods. The whole truth and nothing by the truth from the horses mouth I always say. It was a very educational book, I'd like to read more about what this guy is doing today.

Back to the topic of the outside of horse, really, if you've never been up close and personal with a horse, you should be..your missing out on one of Gods most popular therapies and it's free. ;)

Better to be loved, then not loved at all

Hope, a sad, badly abused horse was lucky enough to be brought home to her forever home by V from Painted Quarters. Hope lived with V for around two years, and they did all they could to make her better, but to no avail and sadly, Hope was put to rest on May 5, 2006. May you rest in piece Hope.

Hope was very lucky to experiece the love she did and V, you did a great thing to give Hope the love she had, as it's better to have been loved, then not loved at all..

Horse sale at Temiskaming Livestock Exchange

It's that time of year again, May 13, 11:00am t0 ?? The annual horse and tack sale that I ALWAYS want to go and ALWAYS miss. It's the same weekend as our annual Merchant Mania show in Kirkland Lake at the complex which is May 12 and May 13. I always have a booth at the show, so I am unable to leave :(

That's ok, I'm sure I will save money, and lord knows I DON'T need anymore tack. I could however, auction off a lot.

So you guys let me know how it goes and if you buy any great horses!

FIRST TPHC Trail Ride

Well, the first TPHC trail ride was a great success with 22 riders showing and the sun shining brightly! Perfect weather and a perfect ride!

Sharon Stewart of Kerry Kroft farms started our day by picking us up from Winterwood. Loading Chelsea on the trailer went with ease, she was a pro! We then drove off way in the back of some sandy trails at Echo Lake located in Earlton Ontario. Perfect ground for riding back there, mostly beach sand.

We all gathered at an area at first to tack up and get ready to go. Chelsea was a real trooper getting off the trailer and getting ready to go. I am sure she could sense my excitement being my first trail ride with the group. I had been looking forward to this ride since last year at this time, but was unable to go then since my mare had a filly by her side. It sure was worth the wait.

Once we were all tacked up and ready to go, we were off! The weather couldn't have been any better. With the cold and snow we had two days before I was concerned on what today would be like. It was perfect, not too hot, not too cold and best of all, no bugs to irritate the horses.

So we headed off onto the trails. Chelsea not knowing any of the horses there looked for an area she was most comfortable in. I had planned on riding at the back of the group, but she wouldn't have it. It turned out she wasn't content till we were at the head of the group with the lead horses. She spent pretty well the entire ride at a constant trot worried about being left behind.

At one point we rode up to the lake to let the horses drink. Chelsea had no interest in water. I suddenly developed a bad calf cramp and had to dismount for a bit. Bad idea, getting back onto Chelsea was more then a challenge, but we prevailed. Then onward and upward on this hill with thick sand and back onto the trails we went.

Towards the end coming back to where we were all parked, I couldn't resist the urge to let Chelsea go so we did a great run between a canter and a gallop. Boy does one need to be in shape riding at those speeds!

So back to the start, we untack our horses, water and clean them down then gather up together to eat some lunch and talk about our ride.
